Davis Congratulates First Round of Second Chance Act Grantees
November 2, 2009

Representative Danny K. Davis (D-IL07) joined today with officials of the Department of Justice and the National Reentry Resource Center in congratulating the 30+ first round of Second Chance Act Grantees.  Programs funded today were focused on youth returning to the community after completing court imposed sanctions.  Davis sponsored the Second Chance Act.

The Second Chance Act provides transitional assistance to assist ex-offenders in coping with the challenges of reentry. It is designed to reduce recidivism, reunite families and protect communities. It will enhance public safety and save taxpayer dollars.  It is the humane, responsible and moral response to the ever growing cycle of incarceration and recidivism confronting state and federal government.

Davis stated, “I congratulate the Grantees whose applications were rated as most deserving of funding under this round.  The competition for these funds was intense and many more applications demonstrated the originality and sound planning required for success.  Compared to the challenge we face in reforming our criminal justice system to become more effective, more efficient and more humane today’s announcement was just a small step.  In my view, however, it was an important, perhaps critical, step and I look forward to following the progress of the first graduates of these programs.”
